Vinyl plantation shutters are the budget-friendly, fully moisture-proof option. They don't have the depth of look that hardwood or AlumaCore® composite delivers, but they handle 100% humidity environments without complaint and they cost less per square foot than any other plantation shutter material.
Not all vinyl plantation shutters are equal. Cheap big-box vinyl shutters use thin-walled extrusions that bow under weight, internal reinforcements that fail in heat, and tilt mechanisms that gum up within a year. Our vinyl plantation shutters use heavy-gauge UV-stabilized PVC with internal aluminum reinforcement spines, sealed-bearing tilt rods, and corrosion-resistant hardware throughout. They cost more than the big-box version — but they last 10x longer.
Vinyl plantation shutters come in a more limited color palette than hardwood or composite — typically white, off-white, and a few warm beige/cream tones. Color goes through the entire material rather than being a surface finish, so chips and scratches don't reveal a different undertone. The trade-off: less customization on color matching to existing trim.
Both vinyl and faux wood handle moisture well. Faux wood looks more like real wood, costs slightly more, and gives you better color and finish options. Vinyl is more affordable, slightly less premium-feeling, but indestructible in extreme humidity environments. For a rental or pool enclosure, vinyl is usually the right call. For a kitchen or bath in your primary home, faux wood is usually worth the small upgrade.
